Design a Critical Solution for the Neighborhood

Assignment due Oct. 17, 2006, Neighborhood Narratives

Design a critical solution for the neighborhood and post on your blog. Expressing yoiur design in text is an option, sketches and/or photographs illuminating, audio interesting, video is another presentation form....

This is based on the proposal of the Homeless Vehicle by Wodiczko as presented in the reading/handout -- and here's a link:
or google: 'wodiczko critical vehicle' to find other links.

However, don't take this assignment literally! Wheeling a vehicle into class would be okay, but the assignment is more about brainstorming a design approach to the issues raised by Wodiczko, such as 'memory of the nameless' and 'tradition of the vanquished' and 'everyday a new history needs to be written...announced by the stranger' et al

Ringtone Pursuits

Yes, I'm probably getting tangled providing user generated ringtones. Sign my NDA if you want more details. In the meantime, follow me down a path to get a ringtone by an industry standard method.....

I open my SquirrelMail email browser to discover the usual spam with gleams of gold of email I want to read. One subject line in a slice-o-spam grabs my attention, "Get todays best ringtones for your phone" and I open the email to discover a girl-in-a bikini gif animation and the following text: Unsubscribe Here
402-612 Boleskine Rd.
Victoria, BC
V8Z 1E8

Note:) In the faint text that indicates writing a letter to Hong Kong might stop this daily email....

So I click thru to open a new browser window at where I find the same pretty girl in another bikini and instructions and TERMS AND CONDITIONS to download a complimentary ringtone. I'm a little suspicious ;) because the complimentary ringtone seems to require a subscription.
Here is the web page:

Sequential order of company/URL involvement in above two step scheme:
"Ringtone JAMJAM"
Ringtonejamjam P.O. Box 89252, Kowloon City Post Office, Hong Kong, 402-612 Boleskine Rd., Victoria, BC, Canada V8Z 1E8

I'm through with this research step.
Now that I re-read the language and detail within the T-n-C and I don't think I'll be getting that complimentary ringtone for $19.99/month. I now proceed to follow up on Sales Hunt proposal, finishing more vodcasts for the recently released New-York Historical Society cell phone / iPod tours, and delve into a cost analysis of my diverse portfolio of art and product.

PS: Forgive the chopped up images above, alas an artifact of copying code from one source into another.

PPS: 2006.12.02 I killed the webpages and images as they were actively seeking their masters...

NN20060919: Psychogeography

Psychogeography is "the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals," according to Guy Debord's Introduction to a Critique of Urban Geography.

Essay -

Introduction to a Critique of Urban Geography

by Guy-Ernest Debord

Of all the affairs we participate in, with or without interest, the groping search for a new way of life is the only aspect still impassioning. Aesthetic and other disciplines have proved blatantly inadequate in this regard and merit the greatest detachment. We should therefore delineate some provisional terrains of observation, including the observation of certain processes of chance and predictability in the streets.

The word psychogeography, suggested by an illiterate Kabyle as a general term for the phenomena a few of us were investigating around the summer of 1953, is not too inappropriate. It does not contradict the materialist perspective of the conditioning of life and thought by objective nature. Geography, for example, deals with the determinant action of general natural forces, such as soil composition or climatic conditions, on the economic structures of a society, and thus on the corresponding conception that such a society can have of the world. Psychogeography could set for itself the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals. The adjective psychogeographical, retaining a rather pleasing vagueness, can thus be applied to the findings arrived at by this type of investigation, to their influence on human feelings, and even more generally to any situation or conduct that seems to reflect the same s pirit of discovery.

Rashômon (1950)
In 12th century Japan, a samurai and his wife are attacked by the notorious bandit Tajomaru, and the samurai ends up dead. Play SLEUTH Saturday 9/26/2006 in NYC

I've been spending time developing the GPS game SLEUTH for the Come Out And Play Festival 2006 [] in New York City. The winning players get FREE beer tickets. Whoopie!

When: The festival will run from September 22-24, 2006. Games will occur throughout the day in locations around the city. See the schedule of games for more details about events.

Where: While games will run in locations around the city, the festival headquarters will be hosted by the Eyebeam Art & Technology Center, located at Eyebeam at 540 W. 21st Street, New York, NY. Stop by the headquarters during the festival for information and to see game updates.

I receive great pleasure designing with my fellow collaborators: Joshua Klein, Joshua Knowles and Kalin Mintchev.

This is a shameless self-promotional post and if you've gotten this far then I thank you for reading it.

KENYA in December 2006

I'm traveling to Nairobi and Lamu Island in Kenya, December 14-29, 2006 with my son Frank as a trailing spouse to Terese Svoboda [], faculty with the Summer Literary Seminars [] program. I'm starting to get excitied about my first trip to Africa.
